CURLING TIPS

01

No physical device may be used in measuring rocks until the last rock of the end has come to rest, except to determine if one of the first two rocks of an end is in the rings or the free guard zone.

02

An opponent's moving stone shall not be swept until the front end of the stone reaches the farther tee line and sweeping shall only take place behind the tee line [Canadian Curling Association Rules of Play Rule 11(7)].

03

It is usually left to the Third/Vice Skip to put up the score for their own team, but anyone on the team can do this.

04

Sweepers and the skip should maintain communication on every shot. Use a few routine words to cover the types of sweep calls (hurry, yes, no, line, room, light, heavy, etc.). Know what shot is called and where the broom is placed. Skips are usually very good at letting you know if the rock needs to be swept for line. Likewise, sweepers should call out the weight of the shot upon release and as it progresses down the ice.

05

Always make sure your footwear is absolutely clean before stepping on the ice - use the boot cleaners provided. Do not wear your street shoes on the ice as dirt and debris will be transferred onto the ice. This is most important during the winter months when salt is in heavy use outside. Salt will melt the ice.
